Frequently asked questions!

How are the prices of various cryptocurrencies calculated?

Detailed information on this topic can be found in the «Market Data» section of the methodology.

What is «market capitalization» and how is it calculated?

Market capitalization is one way to rank the relative size of a cryptocurrency. It is calculated by multiplying the price by the current offer .

Market Capitalization = Price X Circulating supply.

What is the difference between a «Negotiable Offer», a «General Offer» and a «Maximum Offer»?

A circulating stock is the best approximation of the number of coins that are circulating on the market and in the hands of the general public.
The total stock is the total number of coins currently in existence (minus any coins that have been reliably burned).
The maximum reserve is the best approximation of the maximum number of coins that will ever exist during the existence of the cryptocurrency.

Why is a negotiable offer used rather than a general offer when determining market capitalization?

We have found that Circulating Supply is a much better indicator for determining market capitalization. Coins that are blocked, reserved or cannot be sold on the public market are coins that cannot affect the price and therefore should not affect the market capitalization. The method of using Circulating Supply is similar to the method of using a public float to determine the market capitalization of companies in traditional investing.

What is the difference between a «Coin» and a «Token» on a website?

A coin is a cryptocurrency that can function independently.

A token is a cryptocurrency that depends on another cryptocurrency as a platform to operate. Check out the lists of crypto tokens to view the list of tokens and their respective platforms.

Why are commission-free markets excluded from the average price and total trading volume?

When no fees are charged on the exchange, the trader (or bot) can trade with himself and generate a large volume of «fake» ones without penalty. It is impossible to determine which part of the volume is fake, so we completely exclude it from calculations.

How to buy cryptocurrency?

CoinInfo reports on the trading activity of thousands of markets, but does not sell cryptocurrencies directly. The best way to find where to buy is to look at the markets section for cryptocurrencies. For example, to find where to buy Bitcoin, you can look at the markets section for Bitcoin.

Data is collected, recorded and transmitted in UTC time, unless otherwise specified.

For what time is the percentage change calculated in 24 hours?

It is based on the current time. This is a rolling 24-hour period.

Can I use the content (screenshots, data, graphs, etc.) for one of my personal projects and/or for commercial purposes?

You may use the content for academic or journalistic purposes, provided that you specify coinmarketcap.com as a source. Please read the Terms of Use of the website.

Why does a question mark sometimes appear instead of the circulating supply and market capitalization of a cryptocurrency?

To ensure accurate market capitalization ratings, we work closely with teams and developers to verify supply data on their respective blockchains. If a question mark appears, it means that we have not yet sufficiently checked the circulating supply and the final market capitalization.
